Nonprofit fiscal sponsor partnership begins

Sep 11, 2022

Cynthia Perez of La Peña and Wanda Montemayor from Community Arts agreed to launch the Uvalde Love Project in response to the school tragedy in Uvalde, TX on May 24, 2022.

Because Community Art Therapy’s mission is to empower people to heal, grow and achieve balance through research-based practices and art therapy, Cynthia and Wanda were convinced they could design a project that would serve the predominantly Latino community in Uvalde. Art therapy is a proven means to heal from traumatic events. They agreed that a combination of trauma-informed therapy and art in the form of a community mural would offer pathways to enrich the lives of the Uvalde community. Uvalde is a predominantly Latino community--over 80% Latino.

Why La Peña? Cynthia established her organization “ to integrate the arts within the ... life of the community “ with an emphasis on Latino art.
